As a Malaysian, I put really high expectations on theaters/cinemas in California. Since this is the land of the stars (well, Hollywood is like 45 minutes away from where I live), I expect a lot from the two major theaters/cinemas here - AMC and Edward’s.
Two words - they’re okay.
I might want to add that they are both quite similar to each other in terms of service, food, seatings, and organization.
However, when I compare these two to the top two cinemas in Malaysia - Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) and TGV, both of the Malaysian counterparts are way better.
Here’s a list why GSC & TGV beat the crap out of AMC & Edward’s:
1. Sound System
GSC has THX. While I don’t know what sound system TGV uses, it is much better than AMC. Edward’s Theaters’ sound system is forgivable though it’s not better than either GSC nor TGV. I know what I’m hearing and I know how to compare. :)
2. The Ticketing System (organization & seatings)
In Malaysia: you would buy a movie ticket a week in advance. Why? Other than to avoid the ‘sold-out-disappointment’, you want a good seat. Most probably you will get the one in the middle if you made the purchase early enough. That’s right, you pay for your seat that has been assigned to you. (Malaysians will be familiar with the letter J or K for middle-seating) ;)
In California: you would buy the tickets anytime but arrive at the cinema/theater an hour early (or two if it’s premier day) just to fight for the best seat. That’s bullshit. You pay for something that you have to fight for? Haha. -___-
3. The Popcorn
Well, this is my preference. I hate SALTY POPCORN. I want caramel popcorn from GSC - the best popcorn EVER!
At least we Malaysians take entertainment seriously. Don’t you think?
(to clear things up, I’m not writing this post to say which is better, I’m just complaining because I miss home.)
